Televisions & Monitors

Hazardous material

Flat-screen TVs are usually free to recycle at Best Buy and similar programs. Older CRT (tube) TVs are more heavily regulated because the glass contains 4-8 lbs of lead, and often carry a real recycling fee.

Curbside recycling?

No

TVs of any kind do not belong in curbside recycling or household trash.

Safety note

CRT (tube) televisions contain leaded glass and are classified as hazardous e-waste in most states. Only a small number of specialized recyclers in the U.S. process CRT glass, which is why CRT recycling often costs money even when flat-screen recycling is free.

How to prepare it

  • Handle CRT units carefully, the tube can implode if cracked
  • Confirm any recycling fee before dropping off a CRT TV

Common fees

Flat screens: often free. CRT TVs: commonly $15-35, reported as high as $29.99 at Best Buy for CRTs over 32 inches, confirm current pricing before dropping one off.

Quantity limits

Best Buy: limit of 3 TVs/monitors per household per day
